This was the start of the email. There is always one email I wait for when I work with clients. This was it.
Helen joined “Beyond the Crossroads” career coaching programme in June 2022, having reached out to me at Mapleleaf Vision with a common problem. She wanted to change careers but was stuck not knowing what else to do instead.
“I knew that, after almost twenty years, my time in my current career had come to an end but I didn’t know where to go from there or how to go about it. I didn’t have a clue where I wanted to be never mind how to get there.”
As our journey started together, it became apparent to me as a coach that Helen did not believe there was such a thing as a dream job. Actually, if truth be told, Helen is a bit of a home-body and didn’t really want to work at all – but given the necessity, the ideal at that time was a part time role within 2-miles of her home. Oh – and on a similar pro rata equivalent to a secondary teacher’s salary.
Towards the end of our coaching journey, I asked Helen what she was most proud of achieving – bearing in mind no new role had been secured.
“Clarity, positivity and hope. I know what I want to do now and have a clear plan as to how I am going to achieve this. I also know what I absolutely don’t want to do which is equally as important. I am feeling positive about the future and excited about the thought of starting out on a new career path.”
And with knowing the right direction and having clear step-by-step plan on how to get there, Helen was on course to reach “Beyond the Crossroads” and set out on her own with all the skills and tools required to secure that new job offer.
I wait.
I know it’s coming.
It always does – 100% of the time.
Ping. The email lands in my inbox last week.
“So, are you sitting down..??? Guess what??? I BLOODY LOVE MY JOB!!!!!! It has been an amazing two weeks and even this time last week I said to my partner I feel happier than I think I have in years. I can’t explain, it’s so weird!
Have had the best two weeks. Everybody has been so kind, welcoming, supportive. The pace is not completely life consuming, I’ve been told to take the first month to just relax and chat to people… this afternoon was spent climbing at a climbing wall. I had the best afternoon and just couldn’t believe I was getting paid to do it! They have said they’re very lucky to have me…it really is another world! I’m doing full time hours over four days. I get to do work that I love, whilst still combining my passions and skills. It’s honestly been fab and I am so, so happy!”
Let me recap… Helen (as a matter of necessity) was prepared to work a couple of days in a professional role within 2-miles of her home and adamant that dream jobs did not exist.
And here was the email from Helen loving her LIFE, in a full-time new career she LOVES and living the dream!
So final question to Helen –
“Do it! Will is extremely kind and friendly with a great understanding of the position you are in. He is warm and caring whilst being professional and driven to setting you free and onto the correct path. He has created a great programme and clearly does his research in between sessions. He listens to what you say (and takes notes!). He is extremely positive and supportive (it feels like having your own mini cheerleader) but also someone who is challenging you and asking the right questions to make you really think and evaluate, he is not just saying the things he thinks you want or need to hear. I have really valued and enjoyed my sessions with Will and would highly recommend joining forces with him!”
I am so incredibly proud of what Helen – former teacher and Mapleleaf Vision “Beyond the Crossroads” client – has achieved.
Pushing beyond the limits of what she believed possible, Helen now has successfully changed careers into a dream job.
