10 tips to knock out your fear so you can chase your dreams.

Fear has us up against the ropes, another blow and we’ll be down. Isn’t it time you delivered the knock-out blow?

Ding. Ding. The fight is on.

Imagine the fear that has been haunting you for so long is cowering on the canvas in the ring. The countdown begins. You are about to take victory.

10. Face your opponent

The only way that you will ever knock-out your fear is by facing it head on. Stand your ground. The fear you dream up in your head is always going to be far worse than the reality. Once you start to stand up to it, you will realise this fact and your fears will start to weaken.

9. Control your breathing

Fear likes to disable its opponent by causing physical symptoms such as increased heart-rate, sweating palms and rapid, shallow breathing. Fight fear, not yourself. If you feel panic start to take hold, breathe slowly and deeply. Breathe in through your nose as you count to 6, hold for 3, and breathe out through your mouth as you count to 6. You have control.

8. Imagine the worst-case scenario

What is really the worst thing that can happen if you chase your dreams? And what will you do if that did happen? It’s fixable, isn’t it? You now have a plan and suddenly the worst-case scenario isn’t anywhere nearly as bad as fear is trying to make you believe. Don’t trust fear!

7. Examine the facts

Fear loves to dis-empower you by filling your mind with irrational smoke and mirror tactics. Time to blow away the fog. Take a closer look at what fear is portraying. Unpick and dissect it examining the rational facts. Pretty soon you will see behind fears bluff and blunder is a weedy little nothing.

6. Set realistic goals

Fear loves chaos and its biggest weapon is to prevent you from taking any action at all. By setting yourself so realistic steps towards your dream goal, you can take smaller incremental action. You don’t have to be perfect. You just need to start planning and moving forward.

5. Visualise your dream

Having that clear image in your mind of what you want to achieve, the difference it will make to your life, and how it will feel to finally reach your dream goals is powerful. The clarity and focus has fear against the ropes, the steps you are taking means you will win!

4. Talk about your goals

The brain is an incredible thing and the words you physically use imprints learning pathways in your brain, in the same way as physically learning something new. The stronger the pathways, the “truer” the knowledge becomes. Like a habit, your brain will accept your dream goal as a reality that will successfully be accomplished.

3. Reward yourself

For every successful step taken to beat fear and move a bit closer to your dream goal, it is important to reward your achievements with a treat. Every good blow to fear will have the crowds cheering. It gives you strength and resilience to finish the fight, even when you are tired and feeling a little battered.

2. Take time out

Don’t forget to pace yourself. Even the biggest fights have rounds. In between each round, take time out to refresh yourself, review tactics and remember not to neglect your basic needs. Make sure you are maintaining your top physical and emotional form before the bell rings for the final round.

1. Have the right people in your corner

You don’t have to fight fear on your own. Having the right people in your corner is essential if you want to dramatically increase your chances of success. Fear doesn’t stand a chance when you have a supportive network – and a great coach would be advisable, too.

Professional

I first worked with Will whilst I was a junior member of a teaching team. I worked closely with him for around three years and he became a true mentor to me. During this time Will helped encourage me to discover my own leadership style and he mapped out what it takes to be successful. I highly recommend Will for life and career coaching.

Will is a professional, natural leader who manages to make you feel at ease. He manages to be both emphatic and encouraging, whilst also managing to challenge you to find your own answers. Will’s approach is totally non-judgmental and the sessions are really focused on you and on what you want to achieve. Working with Will has allowed me to address challenges I was facing and he brought a wealth of resources and practical tools to help me set goals, clarify my values, and explore avenues right away. Even though I left teaching 5 years ago, I still seek out Will for his help and guidance and I appreciate his versatility as a thought partner, ally, and coach. Our sessions are always productive and efficiently run, which is perfect for someone who is juggling many priorities! Will brings great communication, professionalism and quality to his work and I highly recommend him as a life/business coach.
