Note at no point in this transaction did you feel a failure if you did not achieve the end goal. If the shop did not sell the hot chocolate, you would simply repeat the process and go to another shop. Your confidence is not harmed – this is because you understand the process and it is not “personal’ if the shop says, “I’m sorry, we don’t sell hot chocolate!”
Now let’s apply this lesson to finding a job. It is a process. To get a job, you need to:
But this time, you do take the process personally and you do not feel confident enough to keep trying for other jobs if the recruiter says, “I’m sorry, another candidate better fits our needs.”
However, when you start to view it as a process two things happen. One, it becomes less personal – therefore confidence and self-belief are not harmed. Two, you can take control and evaluate which stage of the process is going wrong – and do something about it.
Yes? The problem is not likely to be at the application stage. Move on to the next question.
